How to generate an e-BRC on DGFT

Under the self-certification system in force since November 2023, you generate the e-BRC yourself by matching your bank's inward remittances to your export documents. Here is the exact process.

The short answer

To generate an e-BRC, log in to DGFT with your IEC, match the inward remittance(s) (IRMs) your bank has reported to the relevant shipping bill, SOFTEX or invoice, set the GST / Vostro / deduction choices, and self-certify. DGFT then issues the e-BRC immediately — there is no per-certificate bank signature.

Step by step

  1. 1Confirm the proceeds are realised in India within the RBI-permitted period (currently 9 months from the date of export).
  2. 2Your AD bank reports the inward remittance to DGFT as an IRM — nothing can be generated until that happens.
  3. 3Log in to the DGFT portal with your IEC and open the e-BRC / bank-realisation section.
  4. 4Match the IRM(s) to the relevant shipping bill / SOFTEX / commercial invoice — group several IRMs under one e-BRC, or split one IRM across several.
  5. 5Set the generation choices (GSTIN benefit, regular vs Vostro/SRVA, deductions) and supply the commercial invoice number.
  6. 6Self-certify — DGFT generates the e-BRC (FC values converted to rupees at the notified reference rate), available immediately.

The generation choices, explained

Avail GSTIN benefit — Yes or No

Whether the e-BRC should be linked to your GST tax invoices. Say Yes to tie it to specific GST invoices (you supply the GST invoice number and date); say No if you don't need that linkage — the e-BRC is still generated against the shipping bill and commercial invoice.

Commercial invoice vs GST invoice — two different things
Even when you say No to the GST benefit, DGFT still asks for an Invoice Number — your commercial export invoice, always required. The GST Invoice No. is a separate, tax-invoice field needed only when you avail the GST benefit.

Payment realised in — regular vs Vostro / SRVA

For a normal foreign-currency export into your own account, it is the regular remittance. Choose SRVA (Special Rupee Vostro) or NVRA (Normal Vostro) only when proceeds were settled in Indian rupees through that arrangement.

Deductions & net realised value

Record commission, discount, insurance, freight and other amounts either as deducted (they lower the certified net realised value and print on the e-BRC) or for information only. Bank charges are the usual reason the amount received is slightly under the invoice — record them so the invoice reconciles.

Doing it in bulk

The manual route works for one or two e-BRCs. Across a year of exports it means matching hundreds of IRMs by hand and supplying the IFSC on every bulk line. EximJinn's e-BRC Generation module maps IRMs to shipping-bill invoices automatically, fills the IFSC once from Generation setup, and prepares the bulk file for you to push and DSC-sign on DGFT — then the download module pulls the finished e-BRCs back in bulk.

Frequently asked questions

Who generates the e-BRC now — the bank or me?

Since November 2023 it is self-certification. Your bank reports each inward remittance to DGFT as an Inward Remittance Message (IRM), and you generate the e-BRC yourself on DGFT by matching those IRMs to your shipping bills, SOFTEX or invoices.

What is the difference between the commercial invoice and the GST invoice?

The commercial (export) invoice is the invoice you raised on the overseas buyer, referenced by the shipping bill — DGFT always asks for it because it identifies what the e-BRC certifies payment for. The GST invoice is your tax invoice and is only needed if you avail the GSTIN benefit.

What do I pick for 'payment realised in' — regular or Vostro/SRVA?

For a normal export realised in foreign currency into your own account, it is the regular remittance (not Vostro). Choose a Special Rupee Vostro Account (SRVA) or Normal Vostro only when the proceeds were settled in Indian rupees through that specific banking arrangement.

Why is the bank IFSC needed, and where does it come from?

When you generate one e-BRC at a time on DGFT, the realisation account's IFSC is filled in for you. In the bulk generation file you must supply the IFSC yourself, because DGFT's IRM download carries the AD code but not the IFSC. It is the same for every remittance through that AD bank branch, so in EximJinn you set it once in Generation setup and it fills every line.

Can e-BRCs be generated for every remittance?

No. Each remittance carries an RBI purpose code, and e-BRCs cannot be generated for certain codes (for example P0101 or P0108); some codes are valid only for goods or only for services. If a line is rejected on the purpose code, check the remittance was booked under the correct one.
